5 Tips to Prevent Tooth Injuries

ToothAccording to WebMD, tooth injuries are quite common with approximately 80 percent of dental injuries affecting one or more of the front teeth. Most of these tooth injuries stem from a sports injury, which can affect all ages. Other reasons why someone may be experiencing a tooth injury include being involved in an automobile accident, falling down and grinding one’s teeth during the night, also known as bruxism. The good news is that most tooth injuries can be repaired by an experienced dentist.

Tooth injury treatment will depend on the type of injury as well as how severe the injury is.

Preventing tooth injuries when at all possible is essential to a healthy mouth. There are a few different types of tooth injuries one can experience, also known as tooth trauma and can include a cracked tooth, a chipped tooth, a fractured tooth, a broken tooth, a dislodged tooth and a knocked-out tooth. Depending on the type of tooth injury will determine whether an emergency dental visit is necessary or if a regular dental appointment can be made in order to treat the injured tooth. If the tooth injury is seen as complicated a referral to see a dental specialist may be necessary.

When someone experiences a tooth injury it may not only affect the tooth it could also cause damage to the soft tissues in the mouth, i.e. cheeks, tongue, lips.

5 tips to prevent tooth injuries

The following are five really great tips that can help someone prevent any tooth injuries from happening in the future.

  1. Wear a mouthguard. The best way to prevent tooth injuries when playing sports is to wear a mouthguard. According to a study published in Sports Health, mouth guards can help prevent most injuries and do not significantly affect ventilation or speech if fitted properly.
  2. Wear a night guard. Wearing a night guard can be extremely beneficial when it comes to preventing the tooth injuries that can often occur when someone grinds their teeth at night on a regular basis.
  3. Wear a special helmet. For those who have been diagnosed with a disorder that may cause them to fall down wearing a specially made helmet can help prevent any tooth injuries from occurring when they do fall down.
  4. Avoid eating hard foods or chewing on hard objects. Many tooth injuries happen when someone eats hard foods like nuts, hard candy and even ice. Chewing on hard objects like pencils or cans can also cause tooth injury and is a habit that needs to be changed or stopped in order to prevent any future tooth injuries.
  5. Take safety measures at home. Safeguarding the home can prevent both children and the elderly from slipping or tripping as many people are injured when at home. Putting in safety gates as well as padding on any sharp furniture corners is also a good idea.
