What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a way to straighten your teeth without traditional metal braces. You wear clear trays in succession, and they straighten your teeth over a period of time.
Is Invisalign really faster than braces?
Invisalign can be about the same speed as braces. It depends on how compliant the patient is. If you're wearing your trays, it can be just as fast as braces, if not faster.
Are they more comfortable?
I believe that Invisalign is more comfortable than braces because braces have metal, and the wire can stick out and poke your gums. Invisalign consists of clear, smooth trays that go over your teeth, which you can take out to eat. You can eat whatever you want, then brush your teeth, floss, and put them back in. Invisalign is a more comfortable option.
Can you sleep with them?
Invisalign is designed to be worn day and night. You should wear it at least 22 hours per day, which means you wear it while you sleep. The only times you take them out are when you're eating and brushing, then you pop them back in, similar to how you would wear regular braces. You have more flexibility because you can take them out when you want to eat, but you must put them back in afterward.
Is it painful?
Invisalign is not painful. The first week can be an adjustment period, but other than that, I haven't had patients complain of pain or problems with wearing Invisalign. We're always here to help. If there's any issue, we can assist with that.
What is the process involved in the Invisalign treatment?
The process involves coming in for a scan of your teeth, which is like a digital impression. We can show you how your teeth look now and simulate how they could look after treatment. Once we agree and everything's set, we start Invisalign by placing attachments on your teeth. These attachments, which are tooth-colored and not very noticeable, will come off at the end of treatment. They're bonded on like regular composite bonding and are removable. Once you have those on, we pop in your first set of trays. We ensure you're doing well for the first week, then you come back after a week or so for a check-up. We give you three to five trays to take home, with specified dates for changing them. You come back for check-up appointments, and we track your progress. When you're done with all the trays, we take another scan to see where you're at. If your teeth and bite look good and you're happy, we send that scan to make retainers called Vivera. These retainers will keep your teeth aligned after treatment, and you wear them at night after treatment is complete. We remove the attachments and provide the Vivera retainers. You wear those for a year at a time, and we monitor as time goes on.
Are there older people doing this?
There are older people doing Invisalign. In fact, we've had at least two to three 80-plus year-olds who have done Invisalign successfully. They look fabulous.
Does most dental insurance cover the cost?
Most dental insurance, or some dental insurances, cover the cost of Invisalign or at least part of it. Usually, they don't cover all of the cost. It depends on your age; sometimes it's only for dependents under, say, age 18 or 19. It really depends on your insurance. You can come in with your insurance information, and we'll look it up to see what benefits you have. If you have orthodontic benefits that we can use towards Invisalign, we will use them and submit all the necessary paperwork to utilize your insurance benefits.
If you don't have insurance benefits, we have other options such as financing with Cherry or other companies we use. This allows you to apply in the office, and if approved, you can have 12 months of 0% interest, making it more manageable to pay for your Invisalign. Thank you.
