Hi, I'm Dr. Priya Mathew from MVP Family Dental, and I'm here to answer some questions about single tooth implants.
What is a single tooth implant?
A single tooth implant is a way to replace a space in your mouth. If you're missing a tooth, you can get a single tooth implant to replace that tooth.
How does it differ from other types of tooth replacements?
A single tooth implant differs from other types of replacements such as a partial denture because it is permanent and fixed. Once it's placed, it stays in place. It doesn't come out at night; it just stays there.
Can you explain the process, from the consult to placement?
The process of getting a single tooth implant starts with an evaluation of the area that needs to be replaced. We take a couple of scans to see how the area looks and if it is a good candidate for implant placement. Once we determine that, we use those scans to make what we call a stent, which acts as a guide. Then you make your appointment for the placement of the implant. With the guide made, we use it to place the implant. After that, you go home and wait about three months for the implant to heal and integrate with your bone. Once it does that, we can take a scan and get your crown made for that implant tooth.
Is that a bone graft for a tooth implant?
Sometimes you need a bone graft for a single tooth implant. It all depends. If you've been missing the tooth for a long time, you may need a bone graft, which means adding bone to that area. If the tooth was newly missing and there's enough bone in the area, then you don't need a bone graft.
How does a single tooth implant compare to a bridge or a denture?
A single tooth implant only affects the area where there's no tooth. With a bridge, you have to prepare the two teeth on either side of the missing tooth. If those teeth don't really need to be crowned, then you're affecting them unnecessarily. A partial denture, on the other hand, comes out and in. It would replace that small area where your tooth is missing, but you would have to take it out at night. It's not as comfortable as an implant.
What should patients expect in terms of healing after receiving an implant tooth?
Patients should expect some time for the implant to heal, but no downtime or significant sensitivity or pain after it's placed. Usually, the next day the patient is fine, with no pain at the implant site. They are numbed for the implant placement. It's really less invasive than a tooth extraction because it's much simpler. It just goes in one way, and you're done. The healing is quite easy.

What are the benefits of dental implants for single tooth replacement?
The benefits of single tooth replacement with a dental implant include ease compared to having a partial or bridge, where you have to prepare the teeth next to the missing spot. You are essentially placing an artificial tooth root where your natural tooth was. It's really the best option for a missing tooth because it fits precisely into the spot where you're missing a tooth.
How much does a single tooth implant cost without insurance?
A single tooth implant can cost between $2,500 for the placement and $2,500 for the crown, totaling about $5,000 for both parts. Keep in mind there's a three-month gap in between, but it's approximately that amount.
Are there significant differences between the cost of a single tooth implant and other options?
There are no significant differences in cost between an implant and other options for what you receive. A bridge may be comparable in price to a single implant since it involves crowns on two teeth and the bridge, which equals three crowns. A partial may be less expensive initially, but it won't last as long. You'll eventually need a replacement, and that cost could equal the initial implant cost. Also, consider the inconvenience of a partial compared to an implant.
