What is restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is any kind of dentistry that restores your teeth. Basically, if you have a broken tooth or a cavity that needs to be removed, it's essentially soft tooth decay. There's a hole, and we need to restore that. We have to bring it back to its original state.

It could include bridges, crowns, veneers, fillings, implants, and yes, implants. Dentures as well. Anything that's going to restore your mouth to its healthy, full complement of teeth. If you're missing a tooth down here, that's a problem because you can't chew as well without the molar or any of these back teeth. That's when we would put in an implant.

Is anesthesia or sedation used during restorative dentistry?

Anesthesia is used when we do restorative dentistry. Usually, we use a local anesthesia to numb that particular area. Sedation can be used; I don't use it here at my office, but we can refer you if needed. We usually try to get it done with local anesthesia and it works fine.

What are the benefits of restorative dentistry?

The benefits of restorative dentistry are you get your teeth back. If you don't have your full set of teeth, restorative dentistry can help with that. You can chew better, which helps you digest your food better, leading to a longer, healthier life. There are so many positive repercussions to restoring all your teeth.

Are there any risks associated with restorative procedures?

There are always risks associated with every procedure, and restorative dentistry is no different. You might experience some pain or sensitivity after a filling, but we're not going to leave you high and dry. We'll make sure you're okay. Other risks? Not really any others I can think of. I think that's pretty much it.

What is the success rate of dental restorations?

The success rate of restorative dentistry depends on what you're doing, but implants have about a 95% to 99% success rate, and fillings as well. Sometimes they chip, it happens. It all depends on your bite and where the tooth is, but that's why the dentist is there to do a full comprehensive exam and let you know the best options for your teeth to be restored.

How long does it take to recover from these restorative dental procedures?

It generally doesn't take long to recover from restorative dental procedures, depending on what you're getting done. I've had patients where we do several veneers in the front and they're fine. I have patients where we do a couple of implant placements and they're totally fine the next day; they don't even have to take Motrin. Fillings are the same. We use a desensitizer under the filling, and sometimes we put a base underneath to protect the pulp, or nerve chamber, from any cold sensitivity that could occur from a filling. We do the best we can to ensure you don't have any symptoms afterward.

Dental restoration encompasses a range of procedures designed to restore both functionality and aesthetics to your mouth and teeth. The primary goal of dental restoration is not just to repair damaged teeth but to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. We recognize that the condition of your teeth can significantly impact your self-esteem and quality of life, which is why we offer an array of dental restoration services at our Jenkintown dental clinic.

Patients may require dental restoration due to various factors like poor oral hygiene, dental trauma, or the deterioration of existing restorations. Missing tooth structure caused by decay or fractures can affect your oral health, but our team specializes in restoring dental integrity through effective tooth repair solutions.

How are cosmetic and restorative dentistry different?

Restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry are similar yet different. Cosmetic dentistry usually involves the front of your mouth and aims to improve the appearance of your teeth. Restorative dentistry also enhances the appearance of teeth once they're restored, but cosmetic is a subset of restorative.

How does a dentist determine if restorative dentistry is needed?

A dentist determines if restorative dentistry is needed by examining the mouth clinically and through X-rays. If there is decay, missing teeth, or similar issues, we would develop a treatment plan for your restorative dentistry needs.

What would disqualify me from being eligible for it?

I was going to say if you don't have any money. No, that might still help a little. Okay. What would disqualify? I don't know how to answer that. I don't think anything would disqualify you from receiving restorative dentistry. If you need it, we will do our best to help you get it.

What are restorative dental procedures?

Some restorative dental procedures include fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, dentures, partial dentures, complete dentures, and veneers. I think I covered it all.

What materials are used in resorative dentistry?

Materials used for restorative dentistry include resin fillings, also known as composite, which are the tooth-colored fillings. We use a bonding liquid to adhere the filling to your tooth. Additionally, we use porcelain and zirconia, a material stronger than porcelain, for crowns, bridges, and some veneers. We work with layered zirconia and layered porcelain, among other types, but those are generally what we use.

How long does it take to recover from a resorative dental procedure?

Recovery times can vary depending on the extent of the treatment. For a full mouth of restorative dentistry, you might have a longer recovery time. With just one filling, there is likely no recovery time. It varies from person to person. Some people are more sensitive, so they might need a longer time to recover, but it's not like general surgery; it's usually pretty easy regarding recovery time.
